Tips for Basic Dental Care

Basic dental care involves brushing and flossing your teeth regularly, visiting your dentist for regular check-ups and eating a healthy diet (whole grains vegetables, fruits, and dairy products).



By following a basic dental care plan you can:

  • prevent tooth decay;
  • improve overall health;
  • prevent gum disease;
  • make it possible for your teeth to last a lifetime;
  • keep teeth white by preventing staining from food, drinks, and tobacco;
  • rid your mouth of the bacteria that cause bad breath.



How to avoid dental problems


  • Eat a balanced diet containing foods from the five major food groups.
  • Brush twice a day: The morning and before bed are good times to brush. Proper brushing requires at least two minutes.
  • Floss before you brush.
  • Visit the dentist at least twice a year.
  • Take Vitamins C and D to help support the absorption of healthy mouth minerals.
  • Avoid foods that contain a lot of sugar.
  • Avoid using tobacco products, which can cause gum disease and oral cancer.
  • Practice tongue cleaning.
  • Use toothpaste that contains fluoride, which helps prevent tooth decay and cavities.
